Having enough storage area for your personal belongings eliminates the need for regular cleaning and maintenance. It keeps your personal stuff in good condition and makes it easier for you to find what you want when you need them.

Wardrobes are good examples of storage spaces. These may either be stand-alone or built-in wardrobes. Built-in wardrobes have become the storage of choice for a lot of homeowners because of its ability to create more space in a bedroom due to its design. It is neat-looking and does not have to be moved around for cleaning. Stand-alone closets do have a charm of their own as they can be decorative as well as functional but its design allows for limited storage only. Choosing the type of your built-in wardrobe should not only be dependent on your need for storage; you must remember that this is going to be a fixed furniture in your bedroom so you must consider a design that will be convenient, useful and durable in the long run.

The list below will offer you options on the type of built-in wardrobe you can install depending on your storage needs, existing bedroom size and design and ease of production. The three main types of built-in wardrobes you can choose from are:

  • Full carcase built-in wardrobe - is fitted with legs under the floor of the carcase, has a top and two sides, 2 doors are attached to the side panels with a hinge. This type of built-in wardrobe is easy to install because of its simple design and may take only one day to build. This may not be a permanent fixture so it can be dismantled when you decide to move. This wardrobe may not be used in bedrooms with irregular ceilings. The storage space is limited by the set sizes of the panels.

  • Frame built-in wardrobe - as the name suggests, this type of wardrobe is built with a floor and frames attached from ceiling to floor and from one side of the bedroom wall to the other. The hinges attach the doors from either front or side of the frames. Storage space is not limited by any side panels and it can be built under sloping ceilings. This construction may need to be done with assistance from a furniture maker and may make take two days to complete.

  • Sliding Door built-in wardrobes – are constructed with sliders as frames from one side of the bedroom wall to the other without a back panel. It may be customized to fit floor to ceiling or maybe made like a carcase built-in wardrobe with a top. The doors do not swing and eat up space. If they are mirrored or made of glass, this type of wardrobe can create an illusion of wider bedroom space. It may also be cheaper to install the sliders but it can be difficult to fit them as well. Cleaning the interiors of this wardrobe may be quite a challenge because the sliding doors may limit access.

As a rule of thumb, choosing your built-in wardrobe involves research, planning and discussions with your furniture provider. It is always best to select a built-in wardrobe made by qualified furniture makers who can guaranty workmanship, superior quality and value for your money. These are manufacturers who should be available to provide after-sales service to address your concerns even after the installation of your built-in wardrobe.
